Harold J. Havard

Harold James Havard, 90, of Newton passed away Friday evening, Sept. 21, 2012.

A graveside service for Harold will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the Newton Union Cemetery. Pence Funeral Home in Newton has been entrusted with the arrangements. Visitation at the funeral home will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25. Memorials are being designated in Harold’s name or to the First Lutheran Church.

Harold, the son of Frank W. Havard and Jennie (Joyce) Havard, was born Jan. 2, 1922, near Grand River, Iowa. Harold had served his country with the U.S. Army. He received a purple heart, was a P.O.W., Sept. 19, 1944, until May 2, 1945, in Luxemburg, and received four battle stars.

On June 15, 1947, Harold was united in marriage with Leora Mae Borchert in Lacona, Iowa. He retired in June 1976 from the Maytag Company, after 30 years of service.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Leora Mae, on Nov. 11, 1983; a daughter, Mary Ann Garrett; a grandson, Jason Garrett; sisters, Vivian M. Eggleston and Edith Esther Davis; and brothers, Frase Coy Havard and Dale L. Havard.

Harold is survived by his son Donald Dean (Wanda) Havard; his daughter Marlys Jean (Kent) Peitzman; his son-in-law, Julian Garrett; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and his many friends.

Graveside services for Harold will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, at the Newton Union Cemetery. Pence Funeral Home in Newton, have been entrusted with the arrangements. Visitation at the funeral home will be 5 p.m. Tuesday until 7 p.m. Memorials are being designated in Harold's name or to the First Lutheran Church.
Harold, the son of Frank W. Havard and Jennie (Joyce) Havard, was born January 2, 1922 near Grand River, IA. He attended Clarke County Schools. Harold had served his country with the US Army, as a Corporal. He received a purple heart, was a P.O.W., Sept. 19, 1944 till May 2, 1945, in Luxemburg, and received four battle stars.

On June 15, 1947, Harold was united in marriage with Leora Mae Borchert in the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lacona, IA. A longtime resident of the Newton area, he was employed by the Maytag Company for 30 years, assembly department and subassembly, retiring June 1976. He had devoted his life to his family and friends, and was a member of the First Lutheran Church. Harold was a gentleman, and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
