News of Tom Hurt’s death last Sunday morning came as a shock to many of our people, for it was not generally known that he was so seriously ill. He had been having erysipelas and pneumonia for two or three weeks and both together were more than medical skill could handle. He passed away at 1:15 a.m. Sunday.

Deceased was born in Wayne County, Kentucky, Aug. 6, 1853. He came to Jasper County in 1878 and settled in the east part of the county. Later he was elected county auditor and moved to Newton. He filled that office for five years and since that time had been in business here and later had been deputy sheriff and a member of the city council, holding these later positions at the time of his death.

He was one of the most generous hearted men that one would ever meet and was often imposed upon because of his well-known desire to do a kindness to his friends. His books would probably show that during the time that he was in the grocery business here hundreds of dollars were charged where the probability of collection was exceedingly small.

Mr. Hurt was first married to Miss Nancy Adkins. To this union there was a son born, Leslie, who now survives. Some nine years ago his wife died, and just four years prior to the day of his death, he was married to Mrs. Alice King of this city who still survives.

The funeral occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Congregational Church, Rev. Cowan having charge of the services, assisted by Rev. Willits. Following the regular sermon the Masonic Order took charge and conducted the remainder of the exercises.
