Ethel A. Payton, 85, of Newton, formerly of Des Moines, died on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011, at the Skiff Hospice Monarch Wing in Newton.
A funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1115 S. Eighth Ave. E. in Newton. The family will greet friends prior to the service and after the service with a lunch at the church. Burial will be at the Oakwood Cemetery in Pleasant Hill.
Memorials to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church or to Skiff Hospice may be left at the church on the morning of the service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home. Memorials may be mailed to the funeral home, please add, Attn: Payton Family to the envelope.
Survivors include her two sons, Patrick (Della) Payton of Newton and Robert (Elleen) Payton of Kansas City, Mo; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter; and her sister, Sheila Payton of San Diego, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Joseph and Ethel Mae (Tatore) Reavy, and her husband, Harold, in 1986.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.

Ethel attended the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton, and she was a member of the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Des Moines.
Ethel was a homemaker and she loved her family, especially all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-granddaughter, and she also enjoyed crocheting.
