Edward L. “Ed” Provin, 85, of Newton died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, at the Skiff Hospice Monarch Wing in Newton.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, at the Wittemburg Church, 662 Holly Ave. in rural Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith of the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Newton officiating. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be at Wittemburg Cemetery in rural Newton.
Memorials to Skiff Hospice or Wittemburg Cemetery may be left at the funeral home or the church the morning of the service.
Edward L. “Ed” Provin, the son of Ora and Orpha (Hildebrand) Provin, was born on June 19, 1926, in Newton. He served his country in the U.S. Army. Ed was united in marriage with Joyce E. Kreager on Sept. 25, 1954, at the Wittemburg Church in rural Newton.
Ed worked in the factory and warehouse at the Maytag Company for more than 46 years. Prior to that he had worked at a bicycle shop and a grocery store. Ed was a member of the Izaak Walton League, Masonic Lodge, NRA and the Jasper County Historical Society. He enjoyed hunting, vacationing, including many trips to Minnesota, wildlife and cars. He was a lifelong resident of Newton.
Edward is survived by his daughter, Lynn (Steve) Gifford of Newton; two sons, Joel (Alison) Provin of Newton and Mike Provin of Newton; his daughter-in-law, Debi Provin; and six grandchildren, Emily Provin, Ryan Provin, Brooke Gifford, Colton Gifford, David DeHart and Paul DeHart; and two sisters-in-law, Jane McDaniel of Newton and Jean (Dave) Hagedorn of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joyce E. Kreager Provin in March of 2011; and 2 brothers, Raymond and Paul Provin.
