Iowa City - Robert D. Dotson, 78, of Iowa City, formerly of Newton, died Saturday, April 6, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Lensing's Oak Hill Funeral Home in Coralville. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at the Highland Memory gardens cemetery in Des Moines. The family will host a reception at the funeral home immeadiately following the service.
Friends may call Tuesday at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the University of Iowa Athletic Scholarship Fund, c/o the University of Iowa Foundation.
The son of Douglas F. and Inez McAllister Dotson, he was born March 18, 1924, in San Antonio, Texas. He moved with his family to Newton and graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1943. He served in the United States Navy with the Sea Bee's in the South Pacific during World War II and graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in commerce.
On Aug. 27, 1950, he married Barbara J. True in Nebraska. He worked at Capitol City Printing Plate in Des Moines for one year before being recalled into the Navy during the Korean War. He then worked for Meredith Publishing Company in Des Moines for several years before moving to Cedar Falls where he worked as city salesman for Matt Parrott Printing Co. in Waterloo. In 1968, he and his wife moved to Iowa City to open the Mr. Steak restaurant in Coralville, which they operated for 15 years.
Mr. Dotson served as president of the Waterloo Jaycee's in the early 1960's and was a member of Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls and the University of Iowa President's Club.
Survivors include his wife, three daughters and two sons-in-law, Denie Dotson of Phoenix, Ariz., Karen and Ray Smith of West Des Moines, Laurie and Michael Wirth of Waterloo; five grandchildren, one brother, a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary and Mike Mumgaard of Lincoln, Neb., and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
