Elmer Pickens, 77, Retired Executive Dies Early Today
Elmer Copley Pickens, 77, of 703 W. 11th S. S., a retired Newton Manufacturing Co. executive, died at 7:30 a.m. today at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral services for Mr. Pickens, who had been in failing health for some time, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday. Place of the services has not yet been determined.
Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.
Morgan-Loehr Funeral Home is in charge of arrangement.
Survivors are his wife, Mabel; and three brothers, Thomas (Bud) Pickens of Des Moines, Robert Pickens of Marshalltown and Glenn Pickens of Hartford, Conn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mrs. James Hill; and a brother, William Pickens.
Mr. Pickens was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, a charter member of the Elks Club, past commander of the American Legion, and a member of the 40 and 8 and the Last Man's Club.
Mr. Pickens practiced law for a time with Judge Silwold and was an executive at the Newton Manufacturing Co. for 33 years, retiring July 1, 1958.
The son of Thomas and Hannah Copley Pickens, he was born on a farm northeast of Newton Sept. 28, 1889 and was graduated from Newton High School in 1907.
He was a graduate of the school of law at the State University of Iowa at Iowa City.
He was married to Mabel Woodrow June 23, 1920 at Newton. ~ The Newton Daily News, January 26, 1967, page 8.
