Mabel Woodrow Pickens

Funeral services for Mabel Woodrow Pickens, 103, of Park Centre Care Center in Newton, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton with the Rev. David Raymond, pastor of the church officiating.

Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home after 8 a.m. Thursday. Visitation with the family will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Congregational United Church of Christ, Dollars for Scholars or the Jasper County Historical Society will be accepted.

Mrs. Pickens died of heart failure, Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the Care Center.

The daughter of John R. and Phoebe Hanson Woodrow, she was born Aug. 11, 1894, in Newton. She was a graduate of Newton High School.

She married Elmer Pickens June 23, 1920, in Newton.

A lifelong resident of Newton, she worked as a homemaker. She was a lifelong member of the Congregational United Church of Christ and a member of the Plymouth Guild and Newton Country Club.

Mrs. Pickens and her husband established a scholarship fund at Central College in Pella. Numerous local students have benefited from the scholarship program. An endowment was also established for scholarships through the Newton Chapter of Dollars for Scholars.

Survivors include a brother, Robert R. Woodrow of San Diego, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Glen Pickens of Sun City, Ariz.; two nieces, Margery Woodrow Hamlet of Stockton, Calif. and Wendy Woodrow Lee of Tucson, Ariz., and a nephew, James Pickens of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and a sister ~ The Newton Daily News, January 21, 1998
