John Gardner Dies in Hospital; Services Monday
John Gardner, 90, a lifelong resident of Jasper County, died Friday in Skiff Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Johnson Funeral Chapel.
The Rev. Hilton Griswold, minister of First Assembly of God Church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in Palo Alto Cemetery.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. today in Johnson Funeral Home.
Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Howard (Nellie) Jones of Newton and Mrs. Grace Stump of Des Moines; a son, John Jr. of Des Moines; eight grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Gardner was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, a son, a daughter, four brothers and four sisters.
The son of Archibald and Rachel Gardner, he was born Dec. 18 1877, on a farm south of Newton.
He was married to Harriett Spearing in August 1899, and after her death in 1902 was married to Minnie Smith in March, 1908. She died in 1942.
Mr. Gardner was a member of the IOOF for more than 50 years. ~ Newton Daily News,December 16, 1967.
