Donald Dean Wickliff Jr., 82, of Newton passed away Saturday, May 21, 2011, in the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
A funeral service for Donald will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 26, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith, chaplain at Skiff Medical Center, conducting the services. A visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Donald’s name are being designated to the Hospice of Jasper County. Burial will be in the Veteran’s Section at Newton Union Cemetery.
Donald, the son of Donald D. and Mary Mae (Garrett) Wickliff, was born Oct. 27, 1928, in Colfax. He was a graduate of Newton Senior High School. Donald had served his country with the U.S. Army. He was employed as a truck driver for the Maytag Company and was retired.
On Nov. 24, 1950, Donald was united in marriage with Mary Lou Shepherd in Monroe. He devoted his life to his family and was a life member of the Newton American Legion Post #111, Moose Lodge and founder of the Newton Archery Club. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing for catfish, hunting mushrooms, bow hunting and the outdoors.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Lou, on July 21, 1994; a granddaughter, Teila; and a daughter-in-law, Susan Wickliff.
Those left to honor Donald’s memory include his sons, Daniel G. (Marilyn) Wickliff, Terry L. (Jane) Wickliff, Charles D. Wickliff and Mark J. (Wendy) Wickliff, all of Newton; his 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; his sisters, Betty (Donnie) Waddle of Monroe, Mary Lou DeHaai of Monroe, Jane Mouchka of Newton and Judy (Terry) Bradley of Newton; his brothers, Harold (Veda) Wickliff of Newton, Dave (Cindy) Wickliff of California, Bill Wickliff of Newton and Jim (Carol) Wickliff of California; many nieces and nephews; and his many friends.
