Barbara A. Smith, 71, of Newton died Saturday, May 22, 2011, at the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing in Newton.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. A private burial will be at Union Cemetery in Newton. Memorials to the Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the funeral home.
The daughter of Berl and Marie (Reynolds) Eilander, Barbara was born Oct. 6, 1939, in Newton. She attended Newton schools and was a lifelong resident of Newton.
Barbara was united in marriage with Chris Smith on May 15, 1956, in Newton. She worked in housekeeping and environmental services at Skiff Medical Center for 17 years. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking, and she loved taking care of her family and spending time with her grandchildren.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Chris of Newton; five children, Nancy (Jim) Anderson of Newton, Sonja Smith of Newton, Chris (Lorna) Smith Jr. of Sioux City, Tracy Smith of Newton and Rob (Kathy) Smith of Des Moines; six grandchildren, Mandy Smith, Eric Smith, Mike (Holly) Anderson, Brandon Smith, Greg Smith and Brittany Smith; two step-grandchildren, Jason Harker and Lissa (Chad) Fengel; three great-grandchildren, Darien, Kaia and Jamen; three step-great-grandchildren, Amber, Amanda and Casey; her siblings, Sherry (Gene) Wharff, Cinda Shaver and Don (Joyce) Eilander; a sister-in-law, Lois Eilander; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Rodney Smith; sisters, Betty McDonald and Donna Eilander; and brothers, Lloyd Eilander, Sylvester “Sy” Eilander and Gerald Eilander.
