Mary Pfile, 102, of Baxter, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at Baxter Health Care Center.
Visitation will be on Friday, May 13, at the Fredregill Family Funeral Home in Baxter from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral service will be at the Congregational United Church of Christ on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Rollin Watters officiating. A luncheon provided by the UCC Ladies will immediately follow the funeral service in the fellowship hall of the Church. Mary’s final resting place will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Marshalltown, Iowa.
Mary was born on Nov. 8, 1908 near Clyde, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Hestella (Davis) Todhunter. She graduated from Baxter High School in 1928. After school Mary married Elmer Dannen of Melbourne, Iowa, in or about 1929. He died of a ruptured appendix about three years later. After a period of mourning, she then married Edward E. Pfile, also of Melbourne, on New Year’s Day, 1934. Unable to have children naturally, they adopted a baby boy, whom they named Kenneth Wayne, in April of 1944. They bought into a small farm two miles northeast of Baxter that was owned by Ed’s uncle, Henry Wintermeier, and lived there until their retirement in the 1960’s, when they sold it to Dwight and Kathy Fisher and moved into Baxter, where they lived until Ed’s death in 1986. Mary continued to live there to age 95, when she sold the house and moved to Newton Village. After three years, she moved back to Baxter to Baxter Health Care Center. She was a member of the Congregational Church of Christ and the ODO. Mary had a great love for spending time with her family and friends, chair caning, quilting and volunteering at the Church.
She is survived by her son, Kenneth, and his wife, Wanda Smith of Mt. Horeb, Wis., a granddaughter, Elizabeth Pfile, of Phoenix, Ariz., and many nieces and nephews and cousins, as well as many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three older brothers, Frank, Allen, and Leo Todhunter; a younger brother, Richard Todhunter; and a grandson, Adam Pfile.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Congregational United Church of Christ or the Baxter Health Care Center. Fredregill Family Funeral Home in Baxter has been entrusted with the care of Mary and her family.
