Marion L. McCumber, 88, of Newton died Sunday, May 8, 2011, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 12, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Howard Vrankin of First Lutheran Church in Newton. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, at the funeral home. Burial Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to First Lutheran Church or the Izaak Walton League may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Frank Matson and Verna Ezra (Lutz) McCumber, Marion was born Dec. 15, 1922, in Colfax, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Laura Gene McBride on Nov. 23, 1968, in Newton. At the age of 75, Marion received his GED, and he also attended DMACC, taking classes in math, Spanish and conservation.
Marion worked as a machinist for the Parsons Company for 30 years and also farmed in Marion County. As a member of the Izaak Walton League, Marion’s concern was conservation and leaving a clean environment of soil, air and preservation of trees for the next generation. He left cover for the habitat on his farm so wild animals would have protection and planted extra corn for the deer to eat. He also was one of many people to sponsor fishing derbies at the Ikes.
Marion and Laura Gene provided many students in the community the opportunity to attend college. They also supported their nieces and nephews in their academic and athletic activities. Marion enjoyed gardening, attending the races at Knoxville and going to the Iowa Speedway.
Marion was a lifelong resident of Newton and a member of the Moose Lodge and First Lutheran Church. He also was a longtime member of the Izaak Walton League.
Marion is survived by his wife, Laura Gene McCumber of Newton; sisters-in-law, Irene McCumber and Hilda McCumber, both of Newton; a brother-in-law, Paul Kolash of Lakota, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Mary Brue, Ruby Dow and Voncille Meador; three brothers, Frank McCumber Jr., Fredrick McCumber Sr. and Norman McCumber.
