POWLESKE, CHARLES ROBERT

Published: September 2, 2007

POWLESKE--Charles Robert, 79, lost his battle with stomach cancer on August 1 in New York City, just one month shy of his 80th birthday. He will be missed by all. Charlie, as he was known, was the President of the Business Council for International Understanding, Inc. (BCIU) from 1983 until his retirement in 1996. He joined BCIU in February 1960 just five years after its creation by President Eisenhower, and continued to advise and mentor the staff of the organization until the final days of his life. Born on September 1, 1927 on a farm in Mingo, Iowa, Charlie enlisted in the U.S. Navy upon his high school graduation, serving in the Pacific and in the post-war Philippines. He returned to the U.S. to study at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service and graduated from St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland. Charlie is remembered as a consummate professional who loved his work and the people from around the world with whom he had contact. His unfailing kindness, gentleness and decency were his signature. He believed it was a special responsibility, and really an honor, to lead BCIU. This dedication and commitment was felt by the many leading U.S. Ambassadors and policymakers who received his support. BCIU's annual Opera Gala at Lincoln Center was inaugurated during his Presidency and its success and growth was a source of great satisfaction to him. Charlie was particularly enthusiastic about this year's October 12th Gala. We consider it to be a special tribute to Charlie's long and dedicated service to the principles of the BCIU. He is survived by his sister, Cleo Clausing; his nephew, Patrick Lee Hues and his wife; two nieces, Cathy Clausing and Colleen Clausing Bria and her husband and children. He is interred at Ashton Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. A ceremony to honor his life will be held at the Yale Club in New York City. Friends are welcome, and should call 212490-0460 for details.
