June R. Shrum, 76, of Newton, died Sunday, May 1, 2011 at her home in Park Centre.
A funeral service has been scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton, with Pastor Gary Marzolf officiating. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 4 at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Newton Union Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Newton YMCA or Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the funeral Home. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is in charge of arrangements.
June was born June 9, 1934, in Sumner, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph and Phyllis (Hucke) Hurmence. She grew up in Fredricksburg and later Avoca. She was a graduate of Avoca High School. She married William F. Shrum in August, 1954 at the Little Brown church in Nashua, Iowa. She was a secretary at the Area Education Association, and an active member of the First United Methodist Church and the Newton YMCA. She also was involved with the Rainbow Girls and the Jaycee Women. She enjoyed swimming and traveling. She especially loved special trips she took with her sister, Pam.
She is survived by three daughters, Lynette Shrum of Altoona; Barb (Jim) Crawford of Marion; and Janna (Dean) Patten of LeClaire; a son, Kendal Shrum of Mesa, Ariz.; nine grandchildren, Jeremy Shrum, Travis Shrum, Alix Crawford, Samantha Crawford, Whitney Armstrong, Nicholas Shrum, Stone Patten, Addy Patten, and Max Patten; a sister, Pam (Dave) Kingery of Newton; and a brother Keith Hurmence of Olathe, Kan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband.
