Thomas R. Buchanan, 74, of Newton died on Friday, April 29, 2011, at the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing in Newton.
A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton. The Rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m. prior to the mass at the church.
The family of Thomas Buchanan will greet friends from 6-7 p.m., Tuesday, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton. A public vigil service will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday at the church; with a coffee time following in McCann Center from 7:30-8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Willowbrook Adult Day Services. Memorials may be left at the church at the times of the visitation and mass or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Arrangements are being handled by the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.
Survivors include his three daughters, Mary (Tom Fredericksen) Buchanan-Fredericksen of Des Moines, Annette Buchanan of Mesa, Arizona, and Tammy (Dan) Stock of Newton; seven grandchildren, Molly (Charles) Williams of Rockford, Illinois, Matthew Stock of Newton, Elizabeth Stock of Newton, Jonathon Fredericksen of Des Moines, Joshua Fredericksen of Des Moines, and Angela Fredericksen of Des Moines; his great-grandson, Ping Williams; brother, Dick Buchanan of Cedar Falls, and sister, Margaret Atwood of Newton; and his niece and a nephew.
He was preceded by his parents, wife, Judy; son, Craig Thomas Buchanan; and grandson, Christopher Fredericksen.

Thomas was born January 27, 1937 and was a graduate of Newton High School in 1955.
Thomas was a mechanic for many years for Crescent Chevrolet and at Maples Chevrolet, retiring in 2002.
Thomas was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton. He loved going to his grandchildren’s school and sporting events. He also enjoyed doing woodworking, going fishing and going to the Old Thrashers Days. Thomas farmed as a hobby.
