Aaron Hammer 1831 - 1914

Obituary

Aaron Hammer, son of Elisha and Rachel Lewis Hammer, was born in Tennessee, June 2, 1831. He is the last member of a large family, there being eleven sons and three daughters. At the age of 16, Aaron Hammer, with his parents, removed from Tennessee and settled in Richland township, Keokuk county, in this state. From there the family came to Jasper county, settling near the place so well known as "Hammer's Grove."

In 1860 the departed was united in marriage to Margaret Guthrie. To this union seven children were born, five of whom are living. R. E. Hammer of Dexter, Iowa; Ida M. Eaton of Kellogg; I. A. Hammer of Des Moines; W. A. Hammer and E. E. Hammer of Newton. Arthur P. died at the age of 26 and Luella at the age of 2 years. There are 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

For more than three score years a resident of Jasper county, it is evident that the deceased was widely and favorably known. He was a member of the Friends church, and at the ripe old age of 83 years, 5 months and 23 days he was permitted to enter into glory on Wednesday morning, November 25, 1914.

Funeral services were held at Center church, west of Kellogg, on Friday at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. A. C. Zollinger of the Kellogg Lutheran church, and the remains laid to rest in Center cemetery.

DEATH OF ANOTHER PIONEER

_____

Aaron Hammer, a Resident of this Vicinity Nearly 68 Years

_____

The venerable Aaron Hammer died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. True D. Eaton at Kellogg, last Wednesday morning, November 25th, at the age of 83 years, 5 months and 23 days. The passing of M. Hammer removes one of our earliest pioneer citizens, who had lived in this community, honored and respected by everybody who knew him, since the spring of 1847--early 68 years ago. For several years he has been gradually failing, more on account of the wearing out of the old physical machinery than from any particular disease. He was always tenderly cared for by his children, and during his declining years made his home with his only daughter, Ida, wife of True D. Eaton, where everything that the tenderest of affection could suggest was done for his comfort and happiness.

Aaron Hammer was the seventh son of the Rev. Elisha and Rachel Hammer. Of the family of eight sons and two daughters, Aaron was the last to pass away. His brothers were: Mahlon, Seth, Henry, Jesse, Ira, Elisha and Isaac, and his sisters were Susanna Janeway and Polly A. Booth.

Aaron was born June 2, 1831, in Jefferson county, Tennessee. In 1846, with his father's family he came to Richland, Iowa, where he attended his first school, his father being the teacher. In the spring of 1847 the family moved to Jasper county, settling in Hammer Grove, near what is now known as Amboy.

In the early 50s Aaron served as deputy county recorder under his brother, the late Elisha Hammer. In the year 1858 he became a member of Newton Lodge No. 59 A. F. and A. M. and at the time of his death was its oldest member in point of years of membership--56 years.

In 1860 he was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Guthrie. To them were born seven sons and two daughters. F.E., I.A., W.A., E.E., and Mrs. Ida Eaton survive the parents and attended the funeral of their father. A son and daughter died in infancy and A. P. died at the age of 26. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. His wife died about 35 years ago. M. Hammer was for a number of years a member of the M. E. church of Newton, but afterward returned to the Friend's church to which he had formerly belonged by birthright.

Funeral services were held at Center Friend's church near Amboy last Friday afternoon. There was a large attendance, many being unable to get into the church. Rev. Zollinger of Kellogg conducted the services assisted by Rev. George C. Williams of Newton. A large delegation from Newton Lodge A. F. and A. M. was present and the beautiful masonic ritual service was conducted by Mr. O. N. Wagley. Interment was in the Friend's cemetery near the church, where scores of loved ones and kindred have been sleeping for years.
