_____Clela Fern Hammer was born November 13, 1904, on the old farm near Center, where she lived until nearly two years ago when she moved to Newton with her parents at 706 Northeast, has gone home to dwell with Him. Her death October 20, 1920. At the time of her death she was sixteen years, eleven months and seventeen days old. Diabetes was the cause of her death.
Clela was a girl of splendid Christian character, trusting in God for everything. She was converted when very young and was a member of the Friends church at Center where she had always attended regularly until moving to Newton, always taking much interest in Sunday school work. She attended Newton High school one year but on account of failing health had to give up school a year ago. She was very patient all through her illness and gentle to those around her. She spent much of her time reading the Bible and only two days before she passed out she asked her mother for her Bible. She turned to the 121 Psalm and read it aloud and said, "Isn't that a pretty Psalm?" After that she never felt able to read but she remained faithful to the end. While her death was a great shock to her parents and sister, Leona, and many relatives and friends, yet they feel that she has gone home to dwell with Him who knows best.
She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jay Hammer, and one sister, Leona.
