Donald R. Ely, 79, of Newton died Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the First United Methodist Church in Newton. The family will greet friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the church. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County or to First United Methodist Church may be left at the church the morning of the service. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.
The son of Clyde Carl and Gertrude (Kelley) Ely, Donald was born Aug. 19, 1931, in Monroe City, Mo. He was united in marriage to Deloris Wilson on June 23, 1952, in Newton.
Donald worked in the factory at the Maytag Company for almost 40 years as a foreman and supervisor. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and attended the First United Methodist Church.
Donald is survived by his wife, Deloris Ely of Newton; three sons, Danny (Teresa) Ely of Newton, Darrell (Sue) Ely of Newton and Dennis Ely of Newton; four granddaughters, Danielle Ely of Newton, Shawna (Eric) Forst of Newton, Amy (Colin) VanDrimmelen of LeGrand and Aleyna (Joel) Hinderberger of Anamosa; four great-grandchildren, Emmalin, Carter, Aryssa and Carston; two sisters-in-law, Gladys Ely of Newton and Bessie Ely of Altoona.
He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Roy Johnson; and four brothers, Bill, Edward, Dean and Robert.
