Wm. Hays, living with his son, Ed Hays, south of town, was found dead in the barn Monday. He had left the house only a short time before as well as usual. It is supposed his death was due to heart failure. He was quite an old gentleman. ~ The Newton (IA) Record, Friday, February 14, 1896, Page 10, Column 1 – Prairie City

Died at his home on Monday, February 10th, Mr. William Hays, of heart failure. The funeral services were held at the house Wednesday, the remain were laid to rest in the Vandalia Cemetery. ~ The Newton (IA) Record, Friday, February 21, 1896, Page 12, Column 6
