Guy Wade Killed When Struck By Car
Funeral Services were Conducted Tuesday Afternoon from Baptist ChurchGuy Wade, 69, well known Colfax resident was killed almost instantly Saturday night when he was struck by a car driven by John J. Spalding of Grinnell, as he was crossing Highway No. 6 near the Swimming Pool.
Just how the accident happened will probably never be known. The driver of the car was the only witness to the accident. He stopped his car after striking Mr. Wade and did what he could to help.
The impact of the car broke Wade's neck and he lived only a few minutes after the accident.
Mr. Spaulding 19, is the son of Forrest B. Spaulding Des Moines city librarian. He is a student at Grinnell college and was accompanied in the car by Sylvia Hilton, a Grinnell college co-ed.
Mr. Wade had just left the home of his grandson. Wm. Cox and was crossing the street when the Spaulding car struck him.
County Coroner McMurray was called and after checking the accident, stated no inquest would be held.
Guy Wade, son of Alexander and Fannie Wade was born December 29, 1867, at Galva, Illinois and came to a seemingly, untimely death in an auto accident in Colfax, Iowa, May 15th, 1937, at the age of 69 years 4 months and 16 days. Coming to Colfax when a young man, Mr. Wade had been a continuous resident here for 45 years For many years he has followed the occupation of truck farming and was considered among the best in this line of work.
On December 22nd, 1892 he was united in marriage to Margaret Jane Boothe. To this union five daughters and one son were born. June 9th, 1906 the wife and mother passed away leaving Mr. Wade alone to care for the family of small children. Besides raising his own children he reared a grandson, Billy Cox.
The surviving children are Mrs. Hazel Mock, St. Louis, Mo. Mrs. Bertha Garland, Calumet City, Ill., Fred Wade, Colfax, Mrs. Ila Lamm, Eagle Grove, Iowa, Mrs. Della Peery, Reasnor, Iowa, and Mrs. Jessie Stevens, Colfax Iowa. all of whom were present for the last rites.
Besides his immediate family he is survived by thirteen grand-children and four sisters, Mrs. Ella Hodgett, Kewanee, Ill., Mrs. Lola Anderson, Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Mary Baker, Wilton Junction, Iowa, Mrs. Anna Tupper, Los Angeles, California and three brothers, Mac, Sidney and Derley Wade of Colfax. One sister preceded him in death.
Mr. Wade was always honest and fair in his dealings and enjoyed a wide circle of friends. He loved his family and friends, and will be greatly missed.
Funeral Services were conducted Tuesday afternoon from the Baptist Church with Rev. C. J. Bukoutz officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. C. J. Bukoutz, Miss Ida Helming, Mrs. John Rinker, Gomer Williams, and a solo by Mrs. E. S. Calhoon accompanist Miss A. Helfenstine was the pianist.
Pall bearers were Chris Smith, C. A. Lesney, Tom Hughes, Henry Barbour, W. S. Jones, and William Garrett. Interment was at the Highland Cemetery.
