ANOTHER AGED CITIZEN GONE. - Solomon Langmaid died at the home of his son, A. E. Langmaid, May 14th, 1892, at the advanced age of ninety-eight.

Mr. Langmaid was one of the few in Jasper County who could look back into the eighteenth century and call up from personal experience and observation many of the leading steps in the progress of civilization.

He was thirteen when Fulton's steamboat made her trial trip up the Hudson, and twenty-six when the first iron plow was made.

He was thirty-six when the first railway passenger train was started, forty-four when steam communication was established between Europe and America and fifty when the first telegraphic dispatch flashed along the wires.

Mr. Langmaid was born the 17th of February, 1794, in Vermonth, where all his early life was spent. While yet in his "teens" he was an active participant in the "War of 1812" winning distinction for his soldierly conduct.

In early manhood he was married to Miss Nancy S. Green who lived to bear him six children, three of whom are still living - one in Vermont, one in Idaho and one in California. Two boys died young and his much loved daughter Emily died one year ago last March.

Mr. Langmaid was afterward married to Mrs. Rachel Morse Stiles who bore him three children. These three, Mrs. Hadley, Mrs. Bader and Mr. A. E. Langmaid live in this community and were permitted to minister to their father's wants during his last illness.

Stephen Langmaid son of the deceased, of Star, Idaho, arrived in Newton on Saturday morning one day too late for the funeral, and three days too late to see his father whom he had not seen for more than forty years.

Mr. Langmaid was a member of the Presbyterian church of Newton and the pastor Rev. D. Brown conducted the funeral from the home on Friday. ~ The Newton Journal, June 1, 1892.
