Thelma D. Fisher, 79, of Newton died Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, at Newton Healthcare in Newton.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home with Chaplain Merle Smith officiating. The family will greet friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at the funeral home.
Memorials in Thelma’s name may be left at the funeral home.
The daughter of Dennis William and Ola Belle (Conger) Grovenburg, Thelma was born Jan. 21, 1932, in Grinnell, Iowa. She grew up in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1950. She was united in marriage to William Lester Fisher on Jan. 6, 1952, and moved to Newton in 1955.
Thelma was a production worker at the Maytag Company for 19 years, retiring in 1992. Prior to that she worked in housekeeping at the Holiday Inn. She was a member of the Local UAW 997.
Thelma enjoyed crocheting, flower gardening, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also very handy and always was doing things around the house.
Thelma is survived by one daughter, Darlene (Jack) Illingworth of Newton; two sons, Ronald Lee Fisher of Newton and William Lester Fisher Jr. of Newton; 13 grandchildren, Shane, Angela, Heather, Shilo, Amber, Brody, Jonathan, Jamie, Michael, Jessy, Stacey, Rocky and Casey; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lloyd Keith (Donna) Grovenburg of Oakland Acres; a sister, Shirley Lillie of Montezuma; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Steven Fisher; her two sisters, Mildred Vulsteke and Helen Strand; and three brothers, Ernest, Dennis and Kenneth in infancy.
