Helen Edith (Tratchel) Kincebach, 98, of Newton died Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at Careage of Newton.
A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. The family will greet friends from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. (Interment: Following the graveside service on Friday, January 14, 2011 at Newton Union Cemetery.) Memorials to First United Methodist Church or Camp Sunnyside may be left at the funeral home.
The daughter of William W. Tratchel and Elsie Edith Ryan, Helen was born Aug. 23, 1912, in Altamont, Kan. She moved to Newton in 1915 at the age of 3 and attended the Newton schools. On Dec. 19, 1948, she was united in marriage with Elmer Ray Kincebach in Newton.
Helen was employed by the Maytag Company in Newton for nine years, from 1950 to 1959. Due to her health, she left Maytag and was employed by Skiff Medical Center in Newton for several years as a nurse’s aid. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton since 1969 and a member of the Easter Seal Society of Iowa, working with Camp Sunnyside in Des Moines. She was a charter member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, where she had served since 1973, and a member of the Golden Age Club since 1965. She helped start the Jasper County Senior Citizens’ Club in 1973, serving as vice chairman for the first year. She also served on the board of directors for several years and was a lifetime member of the Jasper County Senior Citizens Board of Directors. She was very active in the center, helping organize the Senior Citizens’ Kitchen Band and the Singing Seniors, serving as director until 1985. Helen loved to travel and served on the Jasper County Opportunity Board for a number of years, arranging tours for the Senior Citizens of Jasper County. When she could no longer drive, she worked with the Clothes Closet piecing and tying baby quilts for low-income families in Jasper County.
Helen is survived by one daughter, Elsie Mae Logue of Newton; six grandchildren, Mindy, Dixie, Bobby, Mike, Kathy and Rick; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; her step-daughter, Ruby Thompson of Altoona; several step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Don Tratchel of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer in 1961; two daughters, Hazel DeBruyn and Lois Livingston; three sons-in-law; a step-son; three brothers; and two sisters.
