Max L. Calhoon, 82, formerly of Newton, passed away on Sunday evening, January 2, 2011, at the Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Memorial funeral services for Max will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. A visitation with the family will be held following the service, with a lunch in the Pence Tribute Center in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers: Memorials in Max’s name are being designated.
Max, the son of Ezra and Besse (Beard) Calhoon, was born January 11, 1928, in Newton. On December 26, 1949, Max was united in marriage with Vera Jean “Vickie” Kleinendorst, in Newton. Max was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife “Vickie” on August 16, 2009.
Those left to honor Max’s memory include his two sons: Mark Calhoon of Seattle and Kent (Julie) Calhoon of Aurora, Ill.; several grandchildren and a great-grandson; a brother and sister; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and his many friends.

A graduate of the Newton Senior High School, he was a longtime resident of the Colfax area. He was a graduate of Iowa State University in Ames, and later from Northwestern University in Illinois.
Max devoted his life to his wife and family. He started his own consulting engineering company in Naperville, Illinois, where Vickie would help full time, until 1993.
Those left to honor Max's memory include his two sons: Mark Calhoon of Seattle, WA and Kent (Julie) Calhoon of Aurora, IL; his grandchildren: Julie Eleanor 'Calhoon' (Robert) Neiley of Issaquah, WA, Benjamin Calhoon of Clermont, FL and Andrew Calhoon of Aurora; and a great-grandson Karn Neiley of Issaquah; a brother Clair Calhoon of Walnut Creek, CA; a sister Barbara (Don) Torney of Williamsburg, IA; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Bob & Dorothy Kleinendorst of Newton, LaVonne & Gene Talbott of Olathe, KS, Marion Osborn of Cedar Falls, IA and Frank York of Newton; and his many friends.
Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Newton on Friday.
