Kellogg Special--Rufus C. Birchard, 66, prominent business man at Kellogg for the last 50 years, died at his home Sunday at 6:30 p.m. following a six week's illness.

Mr. Birchard had been in failing health for several months and had suffered a severe heart attack at his drug store March 17. Complications developed, causing his death.

FUNERAL SERVICES
The Kellogg business houses were closed for the services, which were conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the home by the Rev. Ernest McAninch of Macedonia, Ia., former pastor of the local M.E. church. Interment was in Our Silent City.

Mr. Birchard was born on a farm south of Kellogg March 16, 1868, and had lived in this vicinity all of his life. He attended the Kellogg schools and was graduated from the Callanan School of Pharmacy at Des Moines.

He had been connected with the drug business since he was 15 years old, when he began clerking in a local drug store. He was formerly in partnership with the late Dr. W. S. Adair and C. W. Woodward and had been sole owner of the store here since 1906.

HAS ONE SON
He was united in marriage to Minnie Wasson of Kellogg in 1897, and to this union was born one son, Hollis T., a druggist at Wilton Junction, Ia. His wife preceded him in death in 1921.

On June 5, 1928 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Eleanor Millet (or Millot) of Kellogg, who survives.

Mr. Birchard had always been prominent in community affairs, having served as town clerk, towship clerk, and secretary of the shcool board. At the time of his death, he was secretary of the Kellogg Mutual Telephone exchange.

ACTIVE CHURCH WORKER
He was also active in the Methodist Episcopal church, serving in various offices and holding the position of chorister at the time of his death. He had been a member of the Kellogg band and was well known throughout the community as a vocal soloist.

Beside his widow and son, he is survived by two brothers, S. G. and T. L. Birchard of Kellogg and his step-mother, Mrs. Mary C. Birchard, also of Kellogg. ~ Jasper County Record, May 8, 1934
