Doug Maahs, 58, of Colfax died Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 22, at the Howard Street Christian Church, with burial following at McKeever Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, at Coburn Funeral with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Doug Maahs Memorial Fund, and condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.
Doug was born on May 5, 1952, in Ames, Iowa, the son of Gene and Naomi (Greinert) Maahs. The family lived in Duluth, Minn., and moved to Decorah, Iowa, in 1956 and to Des Moines in 1958. Doug graduated from Hoover High School in 1970. He worked as a mechanic for several Massey Ferguson dealerships and then became a self-employed farm equipment mechanic. He enjoyed repairing farm machinery and the many farmers he met while working on their equipment. He loved going on annual baseball trips with the men and boys in the Maahs family and visits with his grandchildren. He loved to read and listen to CD’s of music groups from the 60s and 70s.
He is survived by his daughters, Kelly and Susie; a son, Christopher; his companion, Pam Smith; parents, Gene and Naomi Maahs; brothers, Dan (Connie) Maahs and Dave (Pat) Maahs; sisters, Becky (Keith) Soffa and Kristin (Ray Knight) Maahs; and grandchildren, Justen Maahs, Seth Martin, Mikey Ryan and Gabriella Maahs. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ed and Ella Maahs and Louis and Bertha Greinert; and his children’s grandmother, Peg Wickett, and their Uncle Terry. Doug will be missed by his family and his many friends in Colfax and the surrounding area.
