Rites Held For C. E. Whitcomb

PRAIRIE CITY - Funeral services for C. E. Whitcomb were held at the Walters Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. W. W. Marzahn, pastor of the Methodist church in charge. Interment was in the Waveland cemetery. Mr. Whitcomb died in Newton Monday in the home of Mrs. Anna Sherman, where he had been ill for a week, suffering from athema (typed as written) (asthma?), and a heart attack.

Born to William A. and Anne Whitcomb on April 10, 1881 (typed as written) in Rushville, Ia., Charles Edward Whitcomb spent all his life in this vicinity living on farms near Newton, Marshalltown, Prairie City and Spencer. He moved to Newton six years ago from Spencer.

On Sept. 18, 1881 he was married to Hannah Elrod in Monroe, and to this union were born seven children, one daughter preceding her father in death in infancy. Mrs. Whitcomb died on March 14, 1939.

Surviving are, three daughters, Mrs. Charles Cooper of Mason City, Mrs. Arthur Vroom of Prairie City and Aletha Mae Whitcomb of Estherville, three sons, Cecil Edward, of Mt. Rose, Colo., Myron of California and William Verne of Spencer, 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, March 30, 1945
