Zola Romick Edwards Cole, 97, died Sunday, May 9, 2010, in Gloucester, Va.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax. A private graveside service will be at the Colfax Cemetery. The family will greet friends following the service during a coffee time at the First Baptist Church in Colfax.

Cole, Zola Romick Edwards 97, 10/17/1912 - 5/9/2010 Zola Cole, 97, died Sunday, May 9, 2010, at the Walter Reed Convales-cent Center in Gloucester, Va. She was born in Jasper County, Iowa, Oct. 17, 1912, to Charles and Verna (Webb) Romick. To finish high school she was sent to Columbus, Ohio, to live with her aunt and uncle who was the director of education at Ohio State University. She graduated from North High School in 1930 and enrolled in Ohio State University that fall. She returned to Iowa in 1931 where she earned a two-year teaching certificate at Iowa State Teachers College, taught high school and coached a girls basketball team to second place in a state tournament. Zola married Lewis Edwards Jr. of Colfax, Iowa, in 1936, giving birth to sons, Robert (1937) and John (1939). Mr. Edwards died in 1947. She returned to teaching and attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1950. That same year, she relocated the family to Portland where she taught at Harvey Scott Elementary School until retiring in 1975. In 1952, Zola married James Avery Cole of Portland. Mr. Cole died in 1990. She moved to Williamsburg, Va., in 1998. She enjoyed games, crafts, bowling, golf and was very active in the Montavilla Kiwanis Club. In 1979 she was national president of the American Women's Lawn Bowling Association. She is survived by her son, John and his wife, Addy of Williamsburg; granddaughters, Susan Edwards of Los Angeles and Mary Edwards of Boston; three great-grandsons; brothers, Raymond Romick and Thomas Romick, both of Iowa; stepdaughters-in-law, Norma Cole and Sheila Fisher, both of Oregon; and numerous step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Interment will be in Colfax.
