DEATH OF A VERY OLD RESIDENT
George Washington Shaw was born in Sumner county, Tennesse, February 6, 1846; died October 9, 1918, at Monroe, Iowa, age 72 years, 8 months and 3 days. He is survived by his wife, two children, five grandchildren and one brother. He was one of twelve children all of which have passed away with the exception of a brother, Jasper Shaw, now of Lookout, California.
He was converted at Reasnor, Iowa, in the year 1898 and joined the M. E. church of which he was a member at his death.
Mr. Shaw came to Monroe, Iowa in 1866, where he followed the blacksmith trade in partnership with his brother, L.M. Shaw. He was married at Monroe January 24, 1872, to Alice Ann Hathaway. Two children were born to this union, Mrs. Jennie Efnor of Monroe, and Willis M. of Newton. He moved to Menlo, Iowa shortly before his marriage. From there he moved to Casey, Iowa at which place his two children were born. He spent some time in the Black Hills of Dakota, in 1877, and about 2 years in Colorado. He returned to Iowa in 1880 and purchased a farm northeast of Monroe at which place he resided until February 1914, when he moved to his late home in Monroe.
Mr. Shaw was a kind and loving husband and father, a congenial neighbor, he counted all his friends. The funeral services were held in the M.E. church at Monroe Friday afternoon at 2:00 conducted by the pastor, Rev. Hill and the remains were buried in the Monroe cemetery, the exercises being in charge of the Masonic order of which Mr. Shaw had been a member for fifty-one years, being the oldest Mason then living in Monroe. He was made a Mason at Monroe at 21 years of age and had always held his membership there, a record equaled by a very few men.
Card of Thanks – Mrs. Shaw and family wish to thank all the friends for their kindness and assistance in the burial of the deceased.
