Pioneer County Resident Dies

Mrs. George Hews, 86, Succumbs Saturday, Following Extended Illness

Mrs. George Hews, 86, one of the first member of the Newton Daily News Three Quarters Club, died Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the home of her son, Bert, 616 South Third Ave East. Mrs. Hews had been in ill health for some time suffering from cancer.

Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Murdoch Funeral home by Rev. Ross S. Mills, pastor of the Wittemberg church. Interment was in the Hewitt cemetery, east of Reasnor.

Mrs. Hews had been a resident of Jasper County for the last 67 years, coming here as the bride of George Hews in 1865. The couple was married on Nov. 21, 1865 in Canton, Ill., and came to this county, where they settled on a farm in Palo Alto township.

They lived on this farm for about 30 years, moving to Newton 40 years ago. With the exception of three years spent in California,
they had made their home here since, living for the last three years with their son, Bert.

Mrs. Hews was a member of the Christian church and the Women's relief Corps.

Surviving relatives include her husband, George Hews, 89, who is also a member of the Three Quarter Century Club, and her son, Bert of Newton. She was preceded in death by three children, Willie and Nettie, who died in Childhood and Mrs. George Charlesworth, whose death occurred about six years ago.

Hews Services Held at Local Funeral Home

Funeral rites for Mrs. George Hews, 86, pioneer Newton resident, were conducted Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Murdoch Funeral home by Rev. Ross S. Mills, pastor of the Wittemberg church. Interment was in the Hewitt cemetery, east of Reasnor.

Fred W. Hough furnished the music for the services, singing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Abide With Me." Miss Marjorie Hough played the accompaniment.

Pallbearers included Clifford Conn, Joe Long, Fran Efnor, George Efnor, Milo Snodgrass and Oral Snodgrass. ~ Newspaper unknown.
