Additional information from Coburn Funeral Home website:
Jeanetta De Groot was born on February 15, 1920, at her parent’s farm home near Sully, Iowa. She was the fifth of sixth children born to Henry J. and Christina Mathes Van Wyk. She graduated from Taylor Country Grade School and from Sully High School in 1936 at the age of sixteen. Jeanetta graduated from the Iowa School of Beauty in Des Moines, Iowa, and began her beautician career with Ruth Schultz in Kellogg, Iowa. She later established her own beauty salon in her parents home in Sully, called the Kurly Kue; cutting hair for a quarter and perms for a dollar. She married Frederick De Groot on November 19, 1942, moving to the home farm near Mitchellville, Iowa, living there together for 59 years until her poor health necessitated her living at the Mitchellville Care Center. Fred and Jeanetta were married for nearly 67 years before his death in October 2008; Jeanetta then lived near Bonnie at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage, Iowa until her death on Monday, April 26, 2010.
Fred and Jeanetta had two children, Bonnie Maxine, born March 12, 1945, and Dwain Allen, born on March 31, 1947. Dwain was killed in a car accident on January 27, 1967, breaking their hearts and changing their lives forever.
Jeanetta was baptized and made profession of her faith at the First Reformed Church at Sully. Early in their marriage Jeanetta and Fred were members of the Christian Reformed Church of Prairie City and later became members of the First Reformed Church of Prairie City and remained so for the rest of their lives. Jeanetta was active in the Faith and Mission Circle of the church and the neighborhood club, Prairie Belle. Jeanetta was Fred’s right hand as she was his detailed bookkeeper, confidante and solace. The two of them made all the business decisions together, with no big decision made without her input or argument! Jeanetta kept a meticulous home, was a marvelous cook and sewed everything we wore from undies to Dad’s suits. There was not a fabric sale in the area that she did not know about and frequent!
Jeanetta was preceded in death by her ’sweetheart’ Fred; son, Dwain; and with the exception of one, all her siblings and their spouses; Tressie and Walter Van Der Zyl, Wilma and Arthur Vanderpol, Henry and Pearl Van Wyk, Martin and Marjorie Van Wyk, Lester Huyser and Russ Vande Krol. She was also preceded in death by her brother-in law and sister-in law Clarence and Artie De Groot and 4 nieces and nephews: Joyce Van Wyk, Jean (Van Wyk) Nikkel, Carroll Van Wyk, Howard Van Der Zyl, and Mitchell Slegers. Those who will cherish her memory are: Her daughter, Bonnie and husband, Eldean Wendt. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Kyle and Alison (Kaiser) Wendt and their children, Jacob Carter, Alexander Isaac and Evan Robert; Emily and Jerry Johnson and their children, Olivia Anne and Sophia Elle; Ellen and David Cernich and their daughter, Julia Elizabeth; David and Autumn (Hickman) Wendt and their children, Leyton Henry and Callum Roy. She is also survived by her only living sibling, Margaret (Huyser) Vande Krol and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Len and Tess (De Groot) Slegers and 20 nieces and nephews; their spouses, children, and grandchildren.
