MRS. POWERS, 98, DIES HERE

Kellogg Resident Had Been in Nursing Home

Funeral services were held this afternoon, Tuesday, from the Christian church at Kellogg for Mrs. Armelda Powers, 98, who died at a Grinnell nursing home Friday, July 1.

Mrs. Powers, resident of the Kellogg community throughout her lifetime, had been in a nursing home here for about three years. She had been in failing health in recent months.

Surviving are a daughter, Miss Inez Powers of Kellogg; correspondent for the Herald-Register; a son, Clarence of Newton; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Burial was at the Kellogg cemetery.

Mrs. Powers was a member of the Kellogg Christian Church and a life member of the Kellogg Chapter 150 of the Order of Eastern Star. She was an honorary member of the Fellowship club of the church.

Born in Kentucky on May 21, 1857, she moved with her family to the Rock Creek area in 1865. Here an interesting side-note is the fact that Mrs. Powers' family left Kentucky on April 14, 1865, the day President Lincoln was assassinated.

On November 7, 1878, she was married to Charles T. Powers in the home of her parents at Rock Creek. She continued to live in the Rock Creek vicinity until 1894 when she moved to Kellogg. She resided in Kellogg until entering the nursing home here a few years ago.

At 96, prior to moving to Grinnell, Mrs. Powers was still quite active in her garden and around her house at Kellogg.
