Jake DeGreef, 80, of Kellogg died Friday, March 19, 2010, at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
A funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 23, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith of Skiff Medical Center in Newton officiating. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Zion Cemetery in rural Newton.
Memorials to the Kellogg Fire Department or to Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Jacobus and Henderieka (Kingma) DeGreef, Jake was born Feb. 23, 1930, in Kellogg, Iowa. On Jan. 30, 1954, he was united in marriage to Freda L. Poortinga in Newton.
Jake served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmobiling and mushroom hunting. Jake was a member of the American Legion Post 111 and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1655. He was a farmer, retiring in 1990 but still working, and he was a lifelong resident of Jasper County, living in the Kellogg, Newton and Reasnor areas.
Survivors include his wife, Freda of Kellogg; two daughters, Denise Ellenwood of Kellogg and Diane (Tom) Phillips of Norwalk, Iowa; five grandchildren, Chris Ellenwood, Jacki Ellenwood, Sarah Phillips, Mark Phillips and Katie Phillips; a great-grandson, Harley Peacher; his brother, John (Connie) DeGreef of Newton; two brothers-in-law, Fred (Gayle) Poortinga and John Wilcox; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Elizabeth and Bertha DeGreef; and three brothers, Martinis and William L. “Bill” DeGreef and Henry in infancy.
