Roy Edward “Whiskers” Thomasson, 87, of Mitchellville died Wednesday, March 10, 2010, in the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Silent City Cemetery. There will be a family visitation Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Roy E. Thomasson Memorial Fund and condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.
The son of Loren and Myrtle (Birkenholtz) Thomasson, Roy was born on May 18, 1922, in Monroe. He served in the United States Marine Corps. during World War II. On February 17, 1945, he was untied in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Breer; to this union six children were born. Roy was a truck driver for almost 60 years. He drove for Smitty, DeRaad, K Line, Van Welden, Bisom and Hawkeye Woodshaving. Roy enjoyed John Wayne, Circle A Word Puzzles and his family.
Those left to honor his memory are his wife of 65 years, Mary; his children, Jan Poulson of Mitchellville, Paula Smith of Newton, Joy (Chris) Hagedorn of Newton, Jamie (Lori) Thomasson of Newton, and Jay Thomasson of Mashalltown; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Preceding Roy in death were his parents, a daughter, Pamala in 2006, a brother, Carl and a sister Clara.
