Swihart, Dorothy Marie – 1928-2010

Dorothy Marie Swihart, 81, formerly of Monroe, went to be with the Lord on Saturday morning, March 6, 2010, in the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Dorothy was born on Aug. 11, 1928, in Chokio, Minn., the daughter of Herman and Martha (Pahl) Diers. She went to school in Chokio, Minn. Dorothy was employed in the Library Records at the Iowa State Historical Building in Des Moines, retiring in 1989.
Dorothy was united in marriage with Wesley Marcil Swihart on March 25, 1944. To this union were born two sons, Robert and Greg. She had devoted her life to her husband, sons and family. She and Wesley had lived in Clinton, Minn.; Newton, Iowa, in 1953; and Lead, S.D., prior to Monroe, in 1964.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wesley, on Oct. 1, 1991; her daughter, Connie Marie Swihart; and her brother, Walter Diers.
Funeral services for Dorothy will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Family will greet friends on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be left in her name to Newton Village, and left at Pence-Reese.
Dorothy is survived by her sons, Robert K. (Cindy Jo) Swihart of Newton and Greg (Diana) Swihart of Newton; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister Gertrude “Toots” (Vernon) Goldsmith of Big Stone, S.D.; brothers, Melvin (Brownie) Diers of Aberdeen, S.D., Melford (Joan) Diers of Fargo, N.D., and Ted Diers of Rush City, Minn.; brothers-in-law, Elwin Swihart of Newton and Gary (Mary) Swihart of Virginia; several nieces and nephews; and her many friends.
