PRAIRIE CITY — Doris Ruth Van Gorp, 87, of Prairie City went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at Nelson Manor in Newton.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at Prairie City Christian Reformed Church with burial following at Waveland Cemetery. Visitation will be today, Feb. 26, 2010, from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Christian Reformed Church in Prairie City. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee or Hospice of Pella Comfort House. The daughter of Gysbert and Marie (Vander Leest) Steenhoek, Doris was born on June 14, 1922, in Prairie City, Iowa. She graduated from Prairie City High School in 1939. On Feb. 22, 1945, Doris was united in marriage to Paul Van Gorp. Doris lived in the Prairie City area her entire life, helping Paul on the farm and raising her family.
Doris was a member of the Prairie City Christian Reformed Church, where she belonged to the Helping Hand Society and was the organist for 45 years, providing piano and organ music for countless weddings, funerals and community occasions.
Those left to honor her memory are her children, Ruth (Elmer) Vos of New Sharon, Betty (Dale) Van Donselaar of Pella, June (Paul) Vande Noord of Pella, Shirley (Kenneth) Zylstra of Pella and Joan Van Gorp of Prairie City; seven grandchildren, David (Tammy) Vos, Diane Vos, Brenda (Jason) Spencer, Sara Crawford, Julie (Niles) Van Dyke, Jason (Marti) Zylstra and Scott Zylstra and his fiancé Kelly Clarys; and 14 great-grandchildren, Aaron, Ethan, Megan, Andre, Kesiah, Bethany, William, Karina, Brayton, Durant, Trenner, Riley, Aurelia and Antonia.
Preceding Doris in death were her parents; her husband in 2004; a son, Marlin; two brothers, Willard and Lawrence Steenhoek; and a son-in-law, Jim Van Zee.
