Memorial funeral services for Eugene M. Bishop of St. Joseph, Mich., will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, which has been entrusted with the arrangements.
A time of fellowship and lunch in the Pence Tribute Center for family and friends will follow the service. As an expression of sympathy, memorials in Gene’s name are being designated to Hospice at Home. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.
Eugene M. Bishop, 81, the son of Morris and Dolly (Benton) Bishop, was born April 30, 1928, in Newton, Iowa. He graduated from the Baxter, Iowa, High School, Class of 1946. Gene had served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.
On July 24, 1948, Gene was united in marriage with Mary Evelyn Jones in Mitchellville, Iowa; they were married for 44 years. To this union was born their daughter, Debra. Gene was employed by the Maytag Company in Newton, retiring as a millwright. He had devoted his life to his family and friends, was a member of the First Christian Church in Newton and attended The Chapel in St. Joseph, where he served on the Facilities Committee. He had lived the past three years in St. Joseph, after living most of his life in Newton.
Gene left this world on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, in St. Joseph, Mich., to go to be with his Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step mother, Elma; his wife, Mary, on July 29, 1992; and two brothers, Paul and Gerald Bishop.
Those left to honor Gene’s memory include his daughter, Debra (Dale) Vander Heiden of St. Joseph, Mich.; his two granddaughters, Jill (Adam) Hodge of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Jodi (Chris) Miller of Salado, Texas.; his seven wonderful great-grandchildren, Mac, Hank and Stu Miller and Jebb, Landry, Ruthie and Silas Hodge; and many family and friends.
