Death of W. E. Caldwell
Another ad death occurred in this city last week, bringing into one of our happiest homes the deepest sorrow in the loss of a devoted husband and father. Walter E. Caldwell passed away at 5:30 o’clock last Thursday afternoon, February 25th, after an illness of less than two weeks. The cause of his death was erysipelas, resulting from a slight bruise on his face, while in the office of the company for which he was traveling in Des Moines. Mr. Caldwell was one of our best citizens, and the entire community shares with the bereaved family the great sorrow caused by his death.
Walter Edwin Caldwell was born at Seymour, Indiana, July 13, 1869. When a mere child he came with his parents to Bloomfield, Iowa, and has ever since resided in this state. January 29, 1890, he was united in marriage with Miss Amelia Post at Moulton, Iowa, and to them were born four children, Pearl, Edwin, Ella and Dwight, all of whom are at home with the mother. After their marriage they resided in Reasnor for a number of years, he being in the hardware business, excepting for one year when they lived on a farm near Reasnor, until November 1906, when they moved to Newton, into the home east of the Presbyterian Church, where Mr. Caldwell’s death occurred. At the time of his death he was employed as sales manager for the Standard Scale and Manufacturing Co. of Des Moines.
When but a boy he united with the Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. The funeral was conducted from the home on Saturday afternoon, by Rev. T. M. Ballcoff, pastor of First Presbyterian church, the music being rendered by Mrs. Will Carrier, Mrs. James Cunningham and Messrs. Will Carrier and T. G. Bryant, with Miss Elise Bergman as accompanist. Mr. Caldwell’s aged father C. B. Caldwell of Fairfield, and his two brothers W. P. Caldwell of Fairfield and F. T. Caldwell of Chicago, were here to attend the funeral; another brother, Ray Caldwell in Altoona, and a sister in Chicago, could not be here, Ray being quite sick. Messrs. Fred and Levi Post of Moulton, brother of Mrs. Caldwell, were also here. Saturday evening the remains were taken to Moulton for interment, ___the rest of the page is missing. ~ Newspaper unknown.
