Obituary Thos. W. Hough

Thomas W. Hough was born in Waterford Loudoun County, Virginia February 4, 1834, where he spent his childhood and youth. At 21 years of age he engaged with his father in a wool manufactory in connection with mercantile business. On May 29, 1856, he was married to Miss Florida Schooley of Lovettsville, Virginia. To this union were born nine children, two dying in infancy. The mother also died April 13, 1875.

He was again married October 18, 1877, to Fannie M. Lockwood of Newton, Iowa, to whom were born three children, two daughters and one son. One daughter died in infancy and the son H. Clyde Hough dying only five weeks before the father passed away. There are now eight children who with the mother survive the husband and father; two sons, W. E. and A. T. Hough, reside in this city.

Mr. Hough left Virginia in 1859, to make a home in the "far west" locating on a farm near Newton, Jasper County, Iowa, where he lived for many years. In 1892 he transferred his residence to Moulton, Appanoose County, Iowa, at which place he resided until his death October 4, 1911. His age at death was 77 years and 8 months.

He had been in failing health the past year but being of an energetic disposition he would not give up and insisted on attending to his business until a week before his death when the decline was rapid, his malady being cancer of the stomach.

Mr. Hough was always greatly attached to his old Jasper County home and friends, among whom he lived for about 33 years; and since he moved away, has made yearly return visits, coming generally during the county fair, which offered an opportunity of meeting a greater number of old neighbors than at other seasons. He was a kind hearted, companionable man, and his visits were always a source of pleasure to his old-time friends, who were greatly grieved when the news of his death reached them.

According to his own request, his remains were brought to Newton, and from here conveyed to Mt. Zion cemetery near his old home, where he was laid to rest by the side of loved ones in the old family burial lot. Mr. Hough had been a faithful member of the M. E. Church for many years. ~ Newspaper unknown.
