Elrod, Roberta Mae – 1921-2010

Roberta Mae Elrod, 88 of Prairie City went home to her Savior on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral services for Mrs. Elrod will be on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at 10 a.m. at the Prairie City Church of the Brethren with burial following at Griffis Cemetery. Visitation will be today, Jan. 11, 2010, at Coburn Funeral Home of Prairie City from 2 to 8 p.m. with family present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials may be given to the Prairie City Church of the Brethren, and online condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.
The daughter of Paul and Marie (Webb) Cole, Roberta was born on Oct. 30, 1921, at her home near Monroe. Roberta was a graduate of Newton Senior High School. On May 14, 1944, Roberta was united in marriage with John Elrod at the Union Park Methodist Church in Des Moines. Roberta spent her working years as a beautician. Although she was not a veteran of the United States military, Roberta played a very active roll for her country during World War II. She worked for Solar Aircraft during the war and welded airplane manifolds for the military. Roberta enjoyed sewing and playing the piano. She was very active as a member of the Prairie City Church of the Brethren, where she served as a lifetime deacon and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. Roberta also belonged to the Mother’s Club and the church’s Women’s Fellowship.
Those left to honor her memory are her husband, John Elrod of Prairie City; her children, Martin Elrod and his wife Dorothy of Prairie City, Jim Elrod and his wife Mary of Prairie City and Bob Elrod and his wife Joann of Prairie City; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Roberta was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Wilma Decker.
