Death of Mrs. Wilson Thompson

Mrs. Susan Thompson, widow of the late Wilson Thompson, died at the home of her son, Robert Thompson, last Saturday afternoon, March 29th, about 2 o’clock. Mrs. Thompson was one of the early settlers of this county, and was a woman of strong Christian character and with personal charms and characteristics that endeared her to the hearts of a wide circle of friends. Since the death of her husband she has made her home most of the time with her son near this city, where the dear mother’s comfort and happiness were always tenderly looked after. The following brief notes of Mrs. Thompson’s life were handed to us:

Susan Hart was born near Stubenville, Ohio, March 21, 1830, and died at the home of her son, Robert, near Newton after an illness of about six weeks, at the age of 83 years and 7 months. She was married to Alton B. Ferrall, June 24, 1851. To this union were born three children, Mary Alton, now Mrs. Charles Sengfelder, of Seattle, Washington, Vannemar and George who died in infancy.

October 22, 1857, she was married to Mr. Wilson Thompson, who died in this city several years ago. To this union were born seven children: Dell Thompson, of Cairo, Nebraska, and Robert Thompson near Newton, being the only ones surviving the parents; Emma, Lucy, Osie, and Edna died in childhood, and James C. passed away about seven years ago. She also leaves a stepson, S. A. Thompson of Manchester, Iowa, also six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mother Thompson had been a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church from her girlhood.

Funeral services were held at Mr. Zion M. E. Church on Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. H. Perdew of Newton. There was a large attendance of old friends and neighbors and many beautiful floral tributes. The pallbearers were Messrs. Grant Wheatcraft, Frank Forker, Ira Livingston, S. A. Guessford, H. J. bishop and Claude Wheeler. Interment was in Mt. Zion Cemetery. ~ Newspaper unknown.
