Wm. Henning Dies Sunday
Said to be The Oldest Man in Newton – Funeral Services Wednesday
Wm. Henning, who is said to be the oldest man in Newton, died Sunday evening at 9:30 o’clock at the home of his daughter Mrs. C. M. Ross, on First Avenue East, after a year of failing health. Mr. Henning was 94 years and 11 months and 10 days old.
Mr. Henning was born in Hohenhausen Lippe Detmalt (sic), Germany, October 20, 1828 and came to America in 1852 settling in Illinois. He was united in marriage October 24, 1857 to Ernestine Koethe, of Freeport, Illinois. In 1871 he and his family moved to Newton and settled where for many years Mr. Henning operated a brick yard in the west part of town on the west side of the Rock Island track on First Avenue west.
Since coming to Newton he has been one of the prominent pillars of the Methodist Episcopal church and he has all of his life in this city been identified with the betterment of Newton. Mr. Henning despite his advanced years has been active and pleasing company for his young friends and only the last year has his health broken.
He leaves his children, Mrs. Lincoln Marshall, Mrs. C. O. Marshall, Mrs. Cloyce Ross, Fred, William and Henry Henning of Newton and Mrs. C. S. Stofflet of Tipton; also five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Henning preceded him in death three years ago.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Methodist Episcopal church. Dr. Charles b. Hankins pastor of the Methodist church will have charge of the services.
Burial will be made in the Newton cemetery.
