Funeral services for Fred Francis Matheny, 79, of Rt. 3, Newton, a resident of the Newton area since 1924, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 17, at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.
The Rev. Harold Den Hartog, pastor of the Metz community Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.
Friends may call after 8 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.Mr. Matheny died Thursday morning at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Des Moines of complications due to a fall.
Memorial contributions to a fund in Mrs. Matheny’s name may be left at the funeral home.
Survivors are his wife, Eula; a stepson, Floyd “Donnie” Engle of Newton; two stepdaughters, Doris (Mrs. Craig) Booth of Arvada, Colo., and June (Mrs. Kenneth) Ververka of Limon, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving is a brother, Normie Matheny of Springtown, Tex.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a sister and a granddaughter.
Mr. Matheny, a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, had been a construction worker until 1945, a farmer until 1961 and an employee of the Newton Implement Co. until his retirement in 1970.
The son of Elijah and Louisa Davidson Matheny, he was born July 22, 1906 in Calhoun County and was graduated from Lohrville High School.
He was married to Eula Foster Dec. 31, 1944 in Troy, Kan.Source: Newton Daily News; 14 March 1986
