Mrs. Stofflet Dies at Tipton
Final Rites For Former Newton Resident to Be Held Here
Mrs. Ed Stofflet, 58, of Tipton, native resident of Jasper County, died unexpectedly Thursday afternoon, according to word received here by relatives.
Funeral rites will be held in Tipton at 3 p.m. Saturday followed by final services in Newton Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Murdoch funeral home. Dr. Leslie B. Logan, pastor of the Newton Methodist Episcopal church, will be in charge here. Burial will be in the Newton Union cemetery.
Mrs. Stofflet was Bertha Henning, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Henning, before her marriage. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. C. M. Ross, who died several years ago.
Local relatives surviving are two sisters, Mrs. C. O. Marshall and Mrs. L. Marshall, and three brothers, Fred, Henry and William Henning.

Services for Tipton, Ia., Woman Held in Newton Sunday Afternoon
Final funeral rites for Mrs. Edward S. Stofflet, 58, of Tipton, Ia., were conducted from the Murdoch funeral home in Newton Sunday at 2 p.m. by Dr. Leslie B. Logan, pastor of the Newton Methodist Episcopal church.
Music for the local services was furnished by Richard Toedt, who sang, “Have Thine Own Way Lord,” and “Abide With Me.” He was accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Toedt.
Interment Here
Interment was in the Newton Union cemetery, with the following serving as pallbearers: Roy Davis, Will Harvey, Tim J. Campbell, George Campbell, Harry Doane and S. S. Marshall.
Bertha Alvina Minnie Henning, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Henning, was born Feb. 20, 1877, at Newton and died at Tipton, Dec. 26, 1935, at the age of 58 years, 10 months and 6 days. She was one of a family of seven children.
She was united in marriage Aug. 19, 1896, to Edward S. Stofflet by the Rev. C. V. Cowan, pastor of the Newton Methodist Episcopal church. One son was born to this union.
Moved from Newton
The family moved to Tipton in March 1906. Mrs. Stofflet was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Ladies’ Guild and Philathea Sunday school class, serving as treasurer of the class at the time of her death. She had been affiliated with Order of the Eastern Star since 1911.
She is survived by her husband; her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. C. E. Stofflet of Lowden, Ia., a granddaughter, Jean; three brothers, William, Fred and Henry Henning and two sisters, Mrs. C. O. Marshall and Mrs. L. Marshall, all of Newton. Four nieces and one nephew also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her youngest sister.
