Richard A. “Dick” Buchanan, 78, of Newton, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at Hospice of Jasper County’s Monarch Wing in Newton.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at the First United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 27, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.
Memorials to the First United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 111, or to Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the church on the morning of the service or at the funeral home.
The son of Ernest and Wilma (Paulding) Buchanan, Dick was born on Oct. 11, 1930, in Hamilton. He had lived in Newton since the early 1950s. He was a graduate of Lovilla High School in Lovilla, class of 1948.
Dick was united in marriage to Barbara Ellen Bauer and later to Veralea M. Nearmyer on Aug. 23, 1963, in Newton. He worked for many years in the carpenter shop at the Maytag Company, retiring in 1992.
Dick was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 111, Moose Lodge No. 923, Newton Elks Lodge No. 1266, and the UAW Local 997 Retiree’s Union. Dick served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. Dick loved to tell jokes, mushroom hunt, golf, bowl, play cards, fish and hunt. He also loved the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs, the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Newton Cardinals. He also enjoyed going to the casinos.
Survivors include his wife, Veralea of Newton; a daughter, Angela Smith of Kellogg; two sons, Dennis (Lori) Hildebrand of Newton and Scott (Sandy) Hildebrand of Oskaloosa; four grandchildren, Nikole (Bob) Trader and Matt (Macy) Hildebrand, all of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Amy (Chris) McDougall and Ray (Tara) Welch, all of Oskaloosa; five great-grandchildren, Kyra and Kate Trader, Anniston and Ashlyn McDougall, and Merick Welch; a brother, Jerry “Skip” (Barbara) Bilbo of Chicago, Ill.; and a sister, Donna (Roland) Hatchko of Leesburg, Fla.
Dick was preceded in death by his grandparents, Audrey and Ruth Palding; parents; first wife, Barbara; and brother, Dennis (Marilyn) Bilbo.
