Paul L. Hillers, 55, of Newton died Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at Hospice of Jasper County’s Monarch Wing in Newton.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Interment following the funeral service at Our Silent City Cemetery in Kellogg.
Memorials to the Iowa Farm Safety Council or the Minburn Emergency Response Team may be left at the funeral home
Paul was born June 29, 1954, in Perry, to Floyd “Red” and Jean (Clingan) Hillers. He graduated from Central Dallas High School in Minburn in 1972. He received his paramedic education at Mercy Hospital.
Paul was united in marriage with Theresa Paul on Aug. 12, 1988, in Newton. He worked as a paramedic educator for the Hamilton County Hospital for 30 years before retiring in 2007.
He also was a millwright, home remodeler and a published author.
He was a lifetime member of the Iowa Farm Safety Council, and served as president of the council from 1995-1997 and also from 2004-2005. He was an editorial advisor to Rescue Technology.
He was a member of the National Association of EMS Educators and the Minburn Emergency Response Team. He had also served as the Fire Chief in Minburn. He enjoyed remodeling houses, photography and writing for EMS magazines. He also volunteered at the Iowa State Fair for the Farm Safety Council.
Paul is survived by his wife, Theresa of Newton; son, Thomas “Tomy” and wife, Abigail Wuest of Valparaiso, Ind.; two daughters, Heather (Hewitt) Bain and husband, Jason of Moberly, Mo., and Roxanne (Hewitt) Anderson and husband, Mark of Newton; eight grandchildren, Kalob, Chelsea, Greggory, Ashley, Carly, Mitchell, Alixandra and Tyler; brother, Leon P. (Terri) Hillers of Centreville, Va.; sister, Phyllis Hillers of Manchester; father-in-law, Harlow Paul of Bear Creek, N.C.; and three nephews, Christopher, Patrick and Andrew.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
