Koons, Jerry D. – 1934-2009

Jerry Dee Koons, the son of James Dee and Winifred Manilla Crook Koons, was born June 19, 1934 in Pincy, Iowa. Jerry Graduated from the Knoxville Senior High and went on to attend A.I.B. receiving his accounting degree from Drake University. He became a licensed C.P.A. in 1968.
On May 19, 1956, Jerry was united in marriage with Jacklyn A. Mishler. Jerry worked as a Certified Public Accountant for 40 years. He had served in the Iowa National Guard and as a former mayor in Baxter. He coached Babe Ruth baseball in Baxter for many years. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs. He loved his family and fishing with the grandkids. Jerry enjoyed golfing, singing, traveling, singing and storytelling.
Jerry died on August 16, 2009, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was 75 years old. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; his step father; his mother and father-in-law; and his sisters, Dixie Koons, Diana Gilchrist and Harla Jo Eich.
Those left to honor Jerry's memory include his wife of 53 years, Jackie of Newton; his children, Charles (Shelly) Koons of Newton, Michele (David) Spieker of Adel and Mark (Shelley) Koons of Newton; his grandchildren, Alex Koons, Evan Koons, Ashley Koons, Dillon (Crystal) Spieker, Wyatt Spieker, Shadoe Spieker; his great grandchildren, Miles Larcher and Ciera Spieker; his brothers and sisters, Marilyn (Gene) Britt of Des Moines, Sharon ( Garold) Crawford of Kansas City, Janice Hoffman of Pleasantville, Roger (Brenda) Gilchrist of Columbia, Iowa, Danne (Shawna) Gilchrist of Oskaloosa, Hal Dean (Connie) Gilchrist of Knoxville.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 20, 2009, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Friends may call at the Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home after 1:00 p.m. Wednesday. The family will greet friends from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A public vigil service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Interment at Newton Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
