Bette M. DePenning, 91, of Newton died Friday, May 8, 2009, at the Newton Health Care Center in Newton.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, May 12, at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Chaplain Merle Smith officiated. Wallace Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton is in charge of arrangements. The family greeted friends immediately following the graveside service with a coffee time at the Wallace Family Funeral Home.
Memorials to the Arthritis Foundation or Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the service or the funeral home.
The daughter of Clarence and Elenora (Meincke) Riley, Bette was born on March 2, 1918, in Davenport. She grew up in Davenport and moved to Newton while still in school. She graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1936 and from AIB in Des Moines, with a degree in business. She was united in marriage to Roscoe K. “Skeets” DePenning on Sept. 6, 1942, in Newton.
Bette was the Deputy County Auditor for Jasper County for 21 years, retiring in 1986. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and enjoyed bridge club, watching golf, bird watching and sewing. She was also an avid reader and did the bookkeeping for DePenning Inc.
Survivors include two daughters, Connie Riggs of Maryville, Mo., and Deb DePenning of Newton; a son, Michael (Jan) DePenning of Newton; six grandchildren, Melissa (Scott) Brown of Newton, Christopher Riggs of Gladstone, Mo., Amy (Chad) Gastler of Maryville, Mo., Kylie Riggs of Kansas City, Mo., Tammi Herduin and Travis (Jenny) Herduin, all of Newton; and nine great-grandchildren, Josh, Jacob, Summer, Madelyn, Hanna, Kamryn, Grace, Cooper and Laynie.
Bette was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Skeets, on April 23, 2009.
