Roland Failor, 87, of Newton died Saturday, April 25, 2009, at Careage of Newton in Newton.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Roger E. Russell of the Wittemberg Church officiating. The family will greet friends from 9 to 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Wittemberg Cemetery.
Memorials to the Wittemberg Cemetery Association may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Loren R. and Ada M. (Mackerman) Failor, Roland was born on Jan. 8, 1922, in Newton where he was a lifelong resident. On Sept. 8, 1946, at Wittemberg Church in rural Newton, he was united in marriage to Byrnadeen D. Gearhart.
Roland was a lifelong farmer and musician. He played the guitar and banjo in several bands around the Newton, Marshalltown and Des Moines areas. He was a member of the Wittemberg Church. Roland and his wife started the Sunshine Group and played for area nursing homes and other civic groups.
Survivors include three sons, Steven R. (Crystal) Failor of Newton, James E. (Sue) Failor of Montezuma and John L. (Kitty) Failor of Kirkland, Wash.; two daughters, Victoria L. (Richard) Hutchins of Newton and Jeanne M. Failor of Des Moines; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Roland was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Byrnadeen in 2001; and a brother, Eldred Failor.
