A funeral service for Addie Swihart of Newton will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. A visitation time will be on Tuesday from 12:30 p.m. until the service time at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Addie’s name are being designated to Hospice of Jasper County, Metz Community Church or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Addie Elaine Swihart, 83, the daughter of Lyle James and Mary Dorothy (Carlson) Athey, was born April 6, 1926, in Minnesota. Addie was a high school graduate, Class of 1945.
On Aug. 4, 1946, Addie was united in marriage with Elwyn Morris Swihart in Clinton, Minn. They lived in Minnesota and then South Dakota for a short time, moving to Newton in 1966. She had devoted her life to her family and friends and was a member of Metz Community Church in rural Newton. She enjoyed playing bingo, cooking for her family, sewing, crafts, gardening and cross words.
Addie died on Friday evening, April 17, 2009, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Linda Lou, 4 and half years old; and four brothers, Stanley, James, Floyd and Richard Athey.
Those left to honor Addie’s memory include her husband of 62 plus years, Elwyn; her daughters, Brenda Young (Richard) of Dubuque, Iowa, and Janice Babcock (Dennis) of Baxter, Iowa; her six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mary Jane Synhorst, Evelyn Beyers and Virginia Stattelman, all of Minnesota, and Dorothy Davidson of Mississippi; her four brothers, Russell and Elmer Athey, both of South Dakota, and George and LeRoy Athey, both of Minnesota; many nieces and nephews; and her many good friends.
